TH Trooper









The TH Trooper is cut using the original Tarpin Hills Saddlery cutting dies designed and used for many many years by Mr. Larry Heskett.  While my TH trooper saddle is inspired by the Tarpin Hills trooper and is cut using those dies I have made several changes that I think make for a better riding, more durable saddle.  
  1. the Tarpin Hills saddle was made from harness leather.  I use #1 grade vegetable tanned skirting leather grown and tanned in the US.  Harness leather is good leather for harness but was never designed nor intended for saddlery.    Veg tan skirting leather has been used for hundreds of years for saddlery and is unbeatable in its flexability, durability and depth of color.  All of the leather I use comes to me in its natural color.  I then apply dye then hand oil to a deep color and buttery feel are achieved.  I then apply a protective finish that gives a satiny appearance.
  2. The bars that I use are cut from digital patterns using robot cutting machines ensuring unmatched consistency from the left to the right bar.  They are then sprayed with a Dura-hide coating that is lightweight, impact resitant, and seals the bar against the elements.  Straight wood bars or laminated wood bars crack and break far to easily.  
  3. Rigging straps on the TH trooper are heavy weight skirting leather that is riveted and stitched around the rigging ring to improve durability.  I have been told that this is not neccesary and is going a little overboard.  When it comes to securing the saddle to the horse I feel that going a little overboard is a great thing.
  4. Stainless steel is the norm for all rings, dees, and hardware on my saddles.  Brass is pretty when it is new but soon it dulls and makes a  blueish green residue on and around where it is used.  This residue likes nothing better than to eat away at leather.  Stainless steel doesn't.  Its just better.
  5. I chose not to use the seat pattern from the Tarpin Hills saddle.  I am using my own seat pattern.  It is narrower in the middle where your legs cross the transition between the saddles seat and flaps.  The extra narrowness makes this area which is right at your inner thigh area smoother and more comfortable.  
  6. I use my Extra-Cush seat padding system for a more comfortable padded seat.  This is by far a better way to pad a saddle seat.  It is thick and plush, provides better shock absorption, doesn't bottom out, and doesn't flatten over years of use.  
  7. On the back of the seat I install rings and a crupper dee.
  8. All leather edges are beveled and hand painted to seal them and make for a more pleasing appearance.  
  9. I added a latigo hanger and girth carrier.
